EMDR Therapy in the Sutherland Shire
What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychological therapy that helps people recover from trauma, distressing life experiences, anxiety, and other emotional difficulties. EMDR is recognised internationally as an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and has also been shown to be helpful for a range of other mental health concerns.
Many people find that traumatic or overwhelming experiences continue to affect them long after the event has passed. They may experience intrusive memories, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, negative beliefs about themselves, difficulties in relationships, or a persistent feeling of being "stuck." EMDR helps the brain process these experiences so they become less distressing and no longer have the same emotional impact.
How Does EMDR Work?
One of the leading theories behind EMDR involves the brain's working memory.
During EMDR, you are guided to briefly focus on a distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as following the therapist's fingers with your eyes. Because working memory has a limited capacity, holding a memory in mind while completing another task appears to reduce the vividness and emotional intensity of that memory.
Over time, the memory becomes less distressing and can be integrated into your broader life experience in a healthier way. Importantly, EMDR does not erase memories. Rather, it helps reduce the emotional charge associated with them, allowing you to remember the event without feeling overwhelmed by it.
Many clients describe the experience as finally being able to move past something that has felt unresolved for years.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR is most commonly associated with trauma and PTSD, but it can also be effective for a range of psychological difficulties, including:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Complex trauma
Childhood trauma
Anxiety and panic attacks
Grief and loss
Low self-esteem and negative self-beliefs
Distressing life experiences
Relationship difficulties
Medical trauma

Signs That Trauma May Still Be Affecting You
Trauma can affect people in many different ways. You may benefit from EMDR if you experience:
Intrusive memories or flashbacks
Feeling constantly on edge or hypervigilant
Strong emotional reactions that seem difficult to control
Avoidance of certain situations, people, or places
Feelings of shame, guilt, or self-blame
Difficulties trusting others
Persistent anxiety
A sense that past experiences continue to influence your present life
What Happens During EMDR Therapy?
EMDR follows a structured treatment approach that prioritises safety and emotional stability.
Treatment generally includes:
1. Assessment and Planning
We begin by understanding your history, current concerns, goals, and whether EMDR is the most appropriate treatment for you.
2. Building Resources and Coping Skills
Before processing difficult memories, we develop strategies to help you manage distress and feel emotionally supported throughout therapy.
3. Memory Processing
Using bilateral stimulation, we work through specific memories, emotions, beliefs, and body sensations connected to your difficulties.
4. Integration and Future Planning
As distress reduces, we strengthen more adaptive beliefs and develop confidence in managing future challenges.
Is EMDR Right for Me?
EMDR may be helpful if you feel that past experiences continue to impact your emotional wellbeing, relationships, self-esteem, or ability to move forward in life.
Every person's experience is unique, and EMDR is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. During an initial appointment, we can discuss your concerns and determine whether EMDR is likely to be beneficial for your situation.
At Carlie Jordan Clinical Psychology, we provide trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy tailored to your individual needs. EMDR is integrated within a broader therapeutic approach, ensuring that treatment progresses safely, collaboratively, and at a pace that feels manageable for you.
We work with adults and adolescents (15yrs +)across the Sutherland Shire, including Miranda, Caringbah, Cronulla, Gymea, Kirrawee, Menai, Engadine, and surrounding areas, offering support for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and emotional wellbeing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does EMDR require me to talk in detail about my trauma?
No. Unlike some forms of therapy, EMDR does not require extensive discussion of traumatic experiences. While some information is necessary, the focus is on processing the memory rather than repeatedly recounting it.
Is EMDR evidence-based?
Yes. EMDR is supported by a substantial body of research and is recognised internationally as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, current difficulties, and the complexity of your experiences. Some people notice improvements relatively quickly, while others benefit from longer-term therapy.
Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
If you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, Medicare rebates may be available for psychological treatment.
