Body Image Psychologist in Miranda | Support for Negative Body Image & Self-Esteem
Struggling with how you see your body can be exhausting.
If you find yourself constantly critical of your appearance, comparing yourself to others, or feeling uncomfortable in your own skin, you’re not alone. Body image concerns are common, and they can have an impact on your confidence, mood, and daily life.
At Carlie Jordan Clinical Psychology, we support adults and older adolescents across the Sutherland Shire to develop a more balanced, compassionate relationship with their body.
What Are Body Image Issues?
Body image refers to how you think and feel about your physical appearance. Essentially the internalised image you have of your body.
When body image becomes negative, it can lead to persistent self-criticism, dissatisfaction, and preoccupation with perceived flaws, even when others may not see them. A body image issue is often a mismatch between the internalised image of your body and your body.
These concerns can exist on their own or alongside anxiety, low self-esteem, or disordered eating patterns.
Common Signs of Body Image Concerns
You might notice:
Frequent negative thoughts about your appearance
Comparing yourself to others (in person or on social media)
Avoiding mirrors, photos, or certain situations
Feeling uncomfortable or self-conscious in your body
Over-focusing on weight, shape, or specific features
Difficulty accepting compliments
Your mood being affected by how you look
Over time, these patterns can impact confidence, relationships, and overall wellbeing.
How Therapy Can Help
Body image issues are not just about appearance, they’re often connected to deeper patterns in how we think, relate to ourselves, and manage emotions.
In therapy, we focus on:
Understanding the underlying patterns driving negative body image
Reducing self-critical thoughts and comparison
Building self-compassion and a more balanced perspective
Developing practical strategies to manage triggers (e.g., social media, events)
Improving confidence and overall self-esteem
Strengthening your relationship with your body over time
I use evidence-based approaches including CBT, ACT, and schema therapy, adapted to suit your individual needs.
A Supportive, Practical Approach
My approach is warm, down-to-earth, and collaborative.
